The Montgomery Bicycle Club invites you to join us as we commemorate the
historic 50th Anniversary Selma to Montgomery March with a Bicycle Ride on
Saturday, February 21, 2015.
Come pedal the Historic Selma-to-Montgomery Voters Rights March Route on Saturday, February 21, 2015.
While riding the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, we encourage
you to stop and see the sights, envision the march, feel the tension, cross
the bridge, follow the paths of the foot soldiers, and end in triumph...
The journey will begin in Montgomery at the Capitol for a photo op. We
will load buses and bikes to head over to Selma's Riverfront Park on Water Avenue. We
will travel as a group to the Edmund Pettus Bridge for a picture and group
start. You will then follow U.S. Hwy. 80 to the Lowndes Interpretive Center
that is strategically placed near the site of historic "Tent City"
approximately midway between Selma and Montgomery, in White Hall. The
Interpretive Center
will be the site of a rest stop. We invite you to take time and tour the
Interpretive Center before you head to the next stop.
Afterward, ride along U.S. Hwy. 80 to Montgomery and stop along the way to
visit each Trail marker that interprets another tidbit of the march. When
you enter Montgomery continue to follow the Trail signs throughout the city
to visit other historic civil rights sites. Your adventure concludes at the
steps of the Alabama State Capitol where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a
host of others addressed a crowd of 25,000 people in support of voting
rights for all.

The ride will begin and end in Montgomery.
Please keep in mind your registration includes a
transportation fee for a bus for riders and truck for their bicycles from Montgomery to
Selma. Riders who sign up on or before January 31 will receive a free
commemorative t-shirt and a Selma to Montgomery Historic Route Lapel Pin.
The ride is a fully supported event. You will be biking on the clearly marked
Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail with mechanical support, sag wagons, and rest stops supplied with
plenty of fruit, light snacks, water, and sports drinks. There will be chili
including a vegan option and more at the finish line. The Montgomery Bike
Club has been holding
organized bicycle rides for over 20
years.
This is not a beginner ride. While US Hwy 80 is lightly traveled, the speed
limit is 65mph, there is very little shoulder and there are rumble strips
for much of the route. Also, there will not be a police escort for this
ride, and traffic lanes will not be closed for cyclists. Cyclists will ride
this roadway in accordance with Alabama State Law. Typical Alabama weather
for February is 40-60 degrees and raining.
Registration includes transportation for you and
your bike to Selma from Montgomery.

We are limiting registrations to the first
355 registered riders due to limited bus space! So, register

We appreciate the overwhelming response to the Selma ride. However,
once we reach the 330 rider limit there will not
be a wait list and there will not be
on-site day of registration. Due to logistics, time constraints, and
rider safety we feel this is the most we can accommodate. We
appreciate your understanding and support.

Packet Pickup is an opportunity to pick-up your T-shirt, bib number, and
Goody Bag the evening before the ride on Friday, 2/20 from 4 pm - 7 pm. This
will be held at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Legacy Center located at the
Northwest corner of Decatur Street and Washington Avenue at 455 Washington
Ave, Montgomery AL 36104 (see
www.DexterKingMemorial.org/church/legacy-center or use
Google Maps). We also want to load as many bicycles as possible on
Friday evening to save time with loading bicycles on Saturday morning. So,
please plan to bring your bicycle(s) to the
Dexter Avenue King Memorial Legacy Center on Friday evening, February 20
from 4-7 pm.
In any case, we are looking forward to see you on Friday evening, 2/20 from
4-7 for Packet Pick-up and then again on Saturday, 2/21. More information
about Packet Pick-up and ride day will be E-mailed out in the next few days.
